For Indian students aspiring to pursue higher education abroad, understanding the intricacies of the academic evaluation process is paramount. One such crucial metric is the Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA). While it may appear like any other number on your marksheet, your SGPA is a significant indicator of your academic performance that international universities will look for. A strong and consistent SGPA can significantly improve your application, which will open doors for you in top-tier educational institutions and most coveted scholarships
Read on to learn more about how to calculate SGPA from marks, how to convert it into a percentage and vice versa, how to convert it into CGPA, and more about its uses and benefits over other point systems.

What is SGPA?

An SGPA, or Semester Grade Point Average, is a numerical representation of your academic performance for a semester. SGPA is used in universities and colleges to easily calculate how well you have done in your exams for all your courses during that semester, all the while considering both the grades earned and the credit value for each course.

SGPA to CGPA Conversion

You should know by now that while SGPA reflects your performance in a single semester, the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) provides a comprehensive overview of your academic performance across every semester in total.

  • Here is the formula that you can use to calculate your CGPA from your SGPAs:

  • Alternatively, there is also a simpler, albeit less precise, method to measure your score and take the average of all your SGPAs. However, the weighted average method, which uses credits, is more accurate and is considered a standard practice.

How to Calculate SGPA from Marks?

Now that you have learnt how to calculate your SGPA, you should know that there are also instances where your university can provide you with marks instead of grades. In that case, you will first need to convert your marks into grade points.

  • Know the University-Specific Grade Point Table
In India, every university has a predetermined table that contains a range of marks for a specific grade and grade point. For example:
    • 90-100 marks = O (Outstanding) = 10 Grade Points
    • 80-89 marks = A+ (Excellent) = 9 Grade Points
    • 70-79 marks = A (Very Good) = 8 Grade Points
    • 60-69 marks = B+ (Good) = 7 Grade Points
    • 50-59 marks = B (Fair) = 6 Grade Points
    • Less than 50 marks = F/RA = 0 Grade Points
  • Implement the SGPA Calculation Step
Once you have determined the grade point for each subject based on your marks, you can follow the step-by-step instructions guide mentioned earlier to calculate your SGPA.

How to Calculate Percentage into SGPA?

Conversely, if you have received a Percentage as a score, and you need to represent your Percentage as an SGPA, here is how you can calculate the SGPA from the Percentage:

  • A simple approach is to use the reverse of your University’s formula, as it would help you use it to convert your Percentage into SGPA
  • Alternatively, you can use this common formula for conversion as well:

SGPA = (Percentage / 10) + 7.5

How to Calculate SGPA into Percentage?

On many occasions, you may be required to convert your SGPA into a percentage as instructed by the universities abroad for a standardised evaluation. If you get into such a process, then here are a few steps that can help you find your way through this predicament.

  • Firstly, you should know that there is no set formula that all universities follow to make this conversion, as each university may likely have different approaches to evaluating an admission candidate’s exam scores in their previous degree or qualification.
  • Secondly, refer to your university’s official guidelines or contact the examination department for the precise conversation formula.
  • A commonly used, although not a universally accepted formula, is as follows:
    • Percentage = (SGPA - 0.75) x 10
  • There are occasions where there are universities that also follow a simpler formula, such as:
    • Percentage = SGPA x 10

Although we have provided you with two sample formulas, it is always best practice to use the recommended formula by your university to ensure accuracy in your applications.

How to Calculate SGPA?

Calculating your SGPA is a straightforward process. It is the weighted average of the grade points that you have secured in a semester in proportion to the credits for each subject. The universally accepted formula for SGPA calculation is as follows:

SGPA =Sum of (Credit Points x Grade Points)
Sum of Total Credit Points
  • In mathematical terms, the formula for SGPA is denoted as follows:
image.png
  • Here is a simple step-by-step guide to help you calculate your SGPA:
    1. Create a clear list of your subjects, along with the credits assigned to each subject for a given semester by your university.
    2. Familiarise yourself with the grading system of your university, which assigns a specific grade point to a range of subjects (as marks), usually on a scale of 10.
    3. Calculate your grade points for each subject by multiplying the credit by the grade points you have achieved.
    4. Then sum the credits of all the subjects to get the total semester credits. Likewise, sum up the individual grade points for all the subjects (done in the previous step).
    5. Finally, divide the total sum of grade points by the total semester credits to arrive at your SGPA.

Sample SGPA Calculation Table

To help you understand what you have read above more easily, here is a sample SGPA calculation table:

So, by using the formula, we get the following:

So, as per this sample calculation, the final SGPA score will be 8.61.
